For decades, the tobacco industry has profited by inventing and selling products that cause serious, often fatal health effects, such as cancer and respiratory diseases, and which will ultimately kill two out of three users. The tobacco industry has a long-standing history of not only downplaying these health risks but also continuing to aggressively market the same dangerous products.

The Tobacco Industry Observatory monitors and calls out the toxic, often hidden, practices of the tobacco industry in Australia. We highlight the ways in which the tobacco industry exerts influence across multiple domains in Australia, including the political, social, and economic spheres.

The World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, to which Australia is a signatory, recognises the need to be alert to any efforts by the tobacco industry to undermine or subvert tobacco control efforts and to be informed of activities by the tobacco industry that negatively impact tobacco control efforts.
